About this program

The City of Cape Town offers a NERSA-approved feed-in tariff for SSEG solar installations, paying residential customers approximately R0.79/kWh and non-residential customers R0.74/kWh for surplus energy exported to the municipal grid. An additional temporary incentive of 25 c/kWh was available for both residential and non-residential customers. Cape Town has been a leading municipality in South Africa for solar adoption, with its SSEG programme facilitating thousands of residential and commercial solar installations. The city is transitioning towards net-billing schemes with separate network fees.

Eligibility requirements

  • Must be a City of Cape Town electricity customer
  • Must register as an SSEG producer with the City
  • Installation must comply with City of Cape Town SSEG requirements
  • Must have a registered and compliant solar PV installation
  • Bi-directional meter required for export measurement
  • Additional 25 c/kWh incentive expired June 2025
  • Feed-in tariff rates updated annually with tariff cycle
